Mnemonics *Aminoglycosides: Mean GNATS caNNOT kill anaerobes because they need O2; Buy AT $30, CCEL at $50. *
Aminoglycosides: Gentamicin, Neomycin, Amikacin, Tobramycin, Streptomycin
Aminoglycosides work by inhibiting the 30s subunit of the ribosome. These bactericidal antibiotics prevent initiation complex formation.
Aminoglycoside antibiotics are useful for severe infections caused by gram negative rods. They require O2 for uptake therefore are not useful for anaerobes. They show synergism when combined with penicillin or ampicillin for treatment of enterococcus or pseudomonas.
Side effects: Nephrotoxicity, Neuromuscular blockade (caution in myasthenia gravis and with muscle relaxants), Otoxicity, and Teratogenic
- Block 30s subunit No initiation complex formation
- Aerobic gram negative rods
- Streptomycin = DOC for Yersenia pestis
